Is your child dyslexic or does he or she struggle with reading and writing using traditional methods? Or do you want to provide a strong foundation for your beginning reader? Being familiar with several reading & writing programs allows me to apply the best techniques to meet the individual learning styles and strengths of my students to virtually ensure success. Typically, my students with reading challenges advance one or two grade levels. My first and fundamental goal is to develop confidence in my students’ belief in their learning ability by providing simple learning successes which propel them on to greater accomplishments. I am just as excited about their learning successes as they are. I have the habit of working myself out of a job to the delight of my students’ parents. If you are looking for a dedicated and caring tutor whose goal is to generate academic achievement as well as help each student discover and recognize his or her own unique talents in order for to capitalize on what life has to offer, then I am your tutor! 11 Reviews: My daughter Katelyn was in the 2nd grade and reading at a K level. She also vocalized her feelings about being stupid. Mrs. Garrett made her realize just how smart she is. Mrs. Garrett is so patient, kind and encouraging. She can be tough when need be but only for the right reasons. She introduced my daughter and my family to concepts of the English language that we never aware of. Even now having "graduated" from her tutoring we still apply these concepts to her spelling homework, while reading and writing. I would recommend her for anyone struggling in reading and writing. Debbie G. 2015 My son had some difficulties with reading, writing, spelling and comprehension. I was so blessed to have found Mrs. Kathleen when my son was in the 5th grade, he is 13 now and has developed to become a confident and independent student that has soared gracefully to be free and be able to pursue his dreams head on with no doubt when making a decision. There is absolutely no doubt That her teachings and the way she made learning fun, transform my son to be independent and confident. Jorge D. 2015 Toward the end of first grade and after having six teachers, my grandson was unable to read. In listening to his attempts to read, I realized I needed to find him a tutor because I was unable to help him. I found Kathleen online. After reading her qualifications and references from other grandparents and parents who had had the same struggles with their grandchild/child learning to read, I felt I had found the right person who would be able to help my grandson. He started tutoring with her in April of this year; we saw an immediate difference on his first report card. I want people to know that Kathleen’s knowledge and patience has been a tremendous help in my grandson’s success. He is now able to read books and not only that, he has gained self-confidence. In my grandson’s own words, “I don’t feel dumb anymore.” We still have him tutoring with Kathleen and will continue to do so. by Rita S. 2014 I contacted Kathleen through University Tutor in September, 2012, after recognizing that my 7 year old granddaughter was struggling with reading, affecting her efforts in other classroom activities as well. Kathleen's evaluation of my granddaughter was right on target and we committed to 2-one hr. sessions weekly. By week 5 my daughter and I saw much improvement in our girl's phonics and writing skills. She was spelling 4 syllable words, which we found AMAZING! Equally as important, my granddaughter hasn't resisted participating in these sessions and I believe this is because of Kathleen's teaching philosophy plus she's open, friendly, patient and maintains a consistent pace. I see my granddaughter's confidence growing as well. Couldn't be more pleased with her progress and relationship with Kathleen. Thank You. Sandy B. 2014 Kathleen has been working with Connor for a little over 5 months and his reading comprehension went from 5.8 to 6.7; word recognition 5.0 to 6.9; and his phonetic spelling 5.6 to 8.1. We have been very pleased with the attention that he is getting and he enjoys it because she adds humor and always praises when needed. Jarred P. 2013 Kathy is an absolute delight, she was everything I was look for and needed. She was very kind and patient. I needed help studying for the written test for a class A license because in the past I had trouble passing tests. She taught me how to remember what it was I was reading and studying. I never gotten an A in my life, but I was able to pass all my tests with A’s the first time taking them. At age 24, I have learned skills I use for life. Brian W. 2013 My 5th grade son struggles with penmanship, reading, and spelling. For little over two months, he has been going to one hour sessions twice a week with another student. This has worked very well for both students; they motivate and challenge one another while enjoying learning. I have seen great improvement from my son, and even his teacher was pleasantly surprised with his progress. Just before we started my son was starting to struggle so much, that he told me he hated school. I then knew it was time to get a tutor, and Kathy came highly recommended. For the first time, my son is able to read his homework with comprehension and completes by himself. One of the best things would be that his writing is beautiful, where before no one could decipher it. He really enjoys tutoring with Kathy and looks forward to every session, because he knows that it will increase his learning skills. Overall, he has more self confidence and a positive outlook concerning his ability to keep up with his peers. Kasey S. 2013 My son is in 3rd grade and has gone to tutoring through his school since 1st grade with his teachers. He has gone to two different summer reading programs. With all of this work his teacher still says he is in danger of failing. My son works very hard at trying to read and write correctly. He doesn't like the way he feels when he struggles so much at school. I found out about Kathy and we have gone to only 4 sessions at her house and to my amazement I have seen a difference in his writing skills. He is applying the rules the way she teaches and he is already having an easier time reading. The proof that Kathy’s way of teaching is different was when I called a meeting with my sons teacher last week and she asked how much of his writing assignment I helped him with and I told her he did the whole thing at school. I had never seen that story before. For the first time this school year his teacher smiled while talking about his schoolwork. I'm excited to see how much more my son will learn with Kathy. He is feeling better about himself and his frustration with reading is diminishing. I am very impressed with Kathy and the way she works with children and parents. Vicki N. 2013 Seven months ago, my 6th grade daughter was struggling with reading, writing, and spelling. Most of my afternoons were spent helping her with homework. This was when I contacted Kathy for some assistance. After the initial assessment, Kathy concluded that my daughter was an “associative learner” and recommended tutoring twice per week. She started to work to build the strong phonetic foundations that my daughter needed. The improvements have been amazing! My daughter is now bringing home A’s & B’s, she is more confident with her reading, writing, and spelling skills. Her self-esteem is much better because she is able to do her homework independently. She is extremely happy to know that she can do all the tasks that are required of her at school even though she learns differently than other children. As dedicated parents, we want our children to succeed. My daughter’s spelling and reading level went up 1.5 grade levels. The decision to hire Kathy is the best investment I have made toward my daughter’s future. She is not only an outstanding special Ed teacher, but a mother who understands children in a personal and academic way. I strongly recommend Kathy because she’s very intuitive and quickly built a positive relationship with my daughter based on communication, respect, and fun for learning. Her prices are very reasonable. She is always willing to go above and beyond to help in any other way she can. She is a blessing in our lives! My daughter looks forward to additional tutoring this summer for essay writing as she wishes to keep excelling in her education. Alma 2013. Contacted Kathy in May of 2012 because I was concerned about my 7 year old son's poor writing skills. Since that time Kathy has worked patiently with him on the mechanics of handwriting and on building of sentences, paragraphs and most recently on essay writing. Despite my son's reluctance to write, Kathy has had him produce writing that he can really be proud of, building his confidence as well as his abilities. Her style is consistent, bringing about change by drawing attention to the positives rather than dwelling on the negatives. A lesson which as I parent who has read many parenting manuals, I really appreciate seeing in action rather than just in print! Thank you Kathy, we all really enjoy learning from you. Katie B. 2013 I have an 8 year old son in 2nd grade, which has had great struggles in read and writing. Kathy has been an enormous benefit to him in these areas and also teaching him to be more discipline with his studies. Kathy is extremely patience working with my son who has ADHD and she has also helped in building his confidence. He now feels good about school and homework is no longer the battle it used to be.
