Typically, my students with reading challenges advance one or two grade levels. My first and fundamental goal is to develop confidence in my students’ belief in their learning ability by providing simple learning successes which propel them on to greater accomplishments. I am just as excited about their learning successes as they are. I have the habit of working myself out of a job to the delight of my students’ parents. She also vocalized her feelings about being stupid. Mrs. Garrett made her realize just how smart she is. Mrs. Garrett is so patient, kind and encouraging. She can be tough when need be but only for the right reasons. She introduced my daughter and my family to concepts of the English language that we never aware of. Kathleen's evaluation of my granddaughter was right on target and we committed to 2-one hr. sessions weekly. By week 5 my daughter and I saw much improvement in our girl's phonics and writing skills. This has worked very well for both students; they motivate and challenge one another while enjoying learning. Contacted Kathy in May of 2012 because I was concerned about my 7 year old son's poor writing skills. Since that time Kathy has worked patiently with him on the mechanics of handwriting and on building of sentences, paragraphs and most recently on essay writing. Despite my son's reluctance to write, Kathy has had him produce writing that he can really be proud of, building his confidence as well as his abilities. Her style is consistent, bringing about change by drawing attention to the positives rather than dwelling on the negatives.
